AlphaPrep helped more than I ever would have imagined. That sounds like such a cliche way to begin a testimony, but honestly that's the first thing that comes to mind when I think about my tutoring experience. I could trumpet the efficiency of Alpha Prep just based on cold, hard facts; I raised my score from 1900 to 2010 in just a month and a half of tutoring, I got a perfect 12/12 on the Essay section, and more importantly I got into my first choice college Early Decision. But truthfully, the real reason I think Mr.Lippman's tutoring is so incredibly effective and worthwhile isn't just because that my score went up, it's how my score went up. And that happened through simple motivation.
What makes Mr.Lippman's Alpha Prep so valuable is his uncanny ability to connect with kids in such a way that they become self motivated. Let's face it, no matter how many times the parents tell their kids that the SAT's are important, it's still up to the kid to motivate him or herself to put forth a real effort. In the end they are the ones taking the test. And trust me, I know this is true, I'm a kid.
Mr.Lippman wasted no time dawdling over topics or types of questions I already knew I was good at. Instead, in the first hour of the first tutoring session he figured out where my strengths lay and precisely what my weaknesses were. We immediately established a plan and through his guidance I knew EXACTLY what to focus on, and when to focus on it. In short, I never wasted my time. "Tomorrow morning?" I was confused.
"NO MOM" she shouted, "Tonight! I have school tomorrow." As if a teacher coming over at 11 pm is normal.
"I have no time during the day and in the evening I have dance. I have to study for my SAT's and I have NO time. Mr. Lippman found this time for me." I just nodded my head and remembered that next year she would be on her own and this was the way to get her there.
I had known Josh Lippman for a while now but his almost heroic, noble efforts put him in "Superman" status in all of our books. He continually outdid himself. He made my daughter feel as if she were the most important and the only student he had. He is outstanding in his dedication to each and every individual. Add to that the brilliance of how he motivates these kids to keep on going during a potentially traumatic time in their lives, he further earns heroic status. He is joyful in his endeavor and it's contagious, even at midnight. He consistently goes beyond the call of duty with everyone. I often reflected and wondered how he did it (then I remembered he was Superman). And if who he is and his work ethic weren t enough, what he actually produces in terms of results is even harder to believe. It is magical. I never would have expected that my daughter would raise her scores by such a large percentage. In addition she was able to walk into the actual tests with confidence. Josh Lippman simply almost mystically made this a much less arduous process than it would be. I don't know if it is how he teaches or what he teaches that yields his success but I suspect it is both and it works. It is unfortunate that our society dictates that our kids must compete in this way, but given that we can't change the system and this is the process most all of the schools use to weed out the kids on paper, it is a necessary evil. So if you can't beat 'em, you might as well join them and if ever anyone created a fairy tale to come true within this system it is Mr. Lippman.
Having interviewed for years for the University of Pennsylvania and having helped my own two children to matriculate to enviable schools, my daughter would never have been able to get a foot in the door without this miracle of a person standing behind her in every way. He undeniably has a passion that is catching, a knowledge that is unerring and a technique that is not easily come by and hard, if not impossible to duplicate. Through his generosity of giving with his passion and process of teaching, he has given my daughter a gift of a lifetime that is priceless for her future. He is more than a tutor of a test; he has created a path for her accomplished entry to the brave new adult world.

-Wendy Batteau, parent of an AlphaPrep studentBy the end of the last school year, I was not just at the end of my rope I was at the end of the little bits of frayed fibers of what used to be my rope. To my child I had become "the homework witch", but as for me, I was demoralized, questioning what I knew and thinking (well, almost) about buying a plane ticket every time I saw an ad. Or another homework assignment posted on the school web site.
I knew that my child had excellent math aptitude, didn't I? All the standardized tests said so. The teachers of the "gifted" classes said so. But the regular teachers didn't say so. They said, "No homework handed in. No effort. No class participation. Test grades unacceptable." They said it a lot. I tried everything to reverse the trend. Really, everything, including a variety of tutors. Tension, yelling and door-slamming ensued.
The following sentence should be accompanied by the "Zarathrustra" song. Then we found Josh Lippman. A friend whose family had also suffered torture by high-school- math-teachers until her child took a class with Josh, recommended him to me. After much pleading to be able to be included in his schedule, our life turned around. If Josh were some kind of technology, he'd probably clear up global pollution in a couple of months. If he were a superhero, he'd be able to look into a person and then communicate his knowledge into that person's mind. Wait a minute that's just what he did. Within one tutoring session, he had "read" my child and adapted his teaching style to fit. He got my child's personality, established personal connections, figured out learning style and needs, and discovered information gaps that were getting in the way. He taught both concepts and processes and showed how they were connected, and how they could be used. He did this all with such personality, energy, enthusiasm and humor that my child learned it all. Learned it gladly. Studied it outside of tutoring sessions without my having to say a word. Showed me some of the "cool stuff" they did. Looked forward to math sessions. LIKED THEM! Learned more advanced algebra in 6 summer weeks than in 38 school year weeks. Inspired my child. Is a role model.
Do I sound too enthusiastic? If you've ever been in the position of being a parent feeling a wedge driven between you and your teenager (just at the time when communication is hard enough anyway), a parent who worried about a child's potential future options; a parent questioning whether everything you always knew about your child was wrong, then you will understand that I am perhaps not sounding enthusiastic enough. Josh taught my child and at least as important, he made a strong contribution to giving us our "us" back.
